In Kindergarten these last few weeks we have been learning about and doing activities around winter. Thank you for the amazing snowmen we have received for the homework project. The hallways look amazing!
Over the next two weeks we will be focusing on healthy living. Topics we will be discussing are nutrition and healthy eating choices. Please take some time as you pack a quick snack for your child at school to discuss what food group the snack represents. We plan to make ice-cream, and mini pizzas, in class time during the next two weeks. We will also be addressing such topics as hand washing and dental care.
The home reading program is up and running. The students are so proud on Thursdays when they get to sit with the teacher and read the book to them. This is wonderful to see. This is just a reminder that new books come home on Mondays and are to be returned on Thursdays please! We love seeing the picture journal responses the students make in their home reading journals. Try challenging your child to write a word or sentence that represents their picture. They can copy it from the book, or you could challenge them to use their sound knowledge that they have been learning all year. We have officially learned all 42 sounds using the Jolly Phonics program. I encourage you to continue to practice the sounds with your child, as new skills can easily be forgotten. Sight word sheets will be coming home and accompanying the home reading books. There is an information sheet coming home with the first sheet to explain how to practice sight words.
Valentines Day is fast approaching. We encourage the children to write on the valentines themselves. I would suggest breaking it up, and having them complete a few a night, so they do not get discouraged from writing. We will send home a class list of first names again soon, so you are aware of spelling.
Thanks for all you do!
Well, we survived our first week back. We had a wonderful trip to the Galt Museum on Wednesday. Thank you to the parents and grandparents that came along to help supervise.
We are back!!!! January seems to always be a long month, without breaks for the kids. However, we start to see a maturity switch in the kids often at this time of year, as they are becoming more ready for a grade one atmosphere. We begin to challenge the kids more, using the knowledge we have learned, for reading and writing and numeracy.
I just want to remind you that we go outside EVERY DAY for recess. PLEASE send mittens and toques with your children, and if inside shoes were taken home over the break please make sure your child has a change of shoes at school again. The puddles that are left if they wear outside shoes in are a danger for slipping, and they make a mess. Thank you for your cooperation with this!
We go to the Galt Museum on Wednesday, January 6. If you are able to meet us there and help supervise please let your child’s teacher know. Thank you to those that can!
